How to avoid holes at the beginning of rows in Double Crochet

We love to crochet with our crochet hook, but we don’t like finding holes at the beginning of the rows in double crochet.

Have you noticed that hole that always forms when making double crochets? There it is! It’s almost impossible to miss!

You already know that at We Are Knitters, we try to go above and beyond to perfect our skills so that our garments come out perfectly. This is why we’re going to teach you how to avoid holes at the beginning of rows in Double Crochet.

In the image at the top, you can see the results from using our little trick in this post. The bottom row is worked in the traditional way, whereas the one right on top uses our method.

In the final image at the bottom of the post, you can see a sample that contains both methodologies, with the top utilizing our method, and the bottom in a more traditional way.

As you can see, the hole disappears 😀

After finishing a row in double crochet, chain 3.

Turn your work counter-clockwise.

Now, insert your hook into the 2nd chain from your hook.

Yarn over and draw yarn through the chain. You’ll have two loops on your crochet hook.

Insert your hook into the spot to make the next double crochet, but don’t yarn over before inserting your hook as you would traditionally do.

Once you’ve inserted your hook, draw yarn through the chain. You’ll have three loops on your crochet hook.

Finish the double crochet like you usually do, drawing yarn through two loops each time, until there is only one loop left on the hook.

After doing this on the first double crochet in the row, work the rest of the double crochets like always.

What we’re doing is simply binding the first 3 chains of each row with the first double crochet, in that way we close up the hole that appears at the beginning.

This trick works for any stitches, double crochet or longer!
