There is nothing we love more in winter than to pass the afternoon knitting, cuddled into a warm blanket with a cup of coffee or tea to keep us company.
This time of the year is perfect for learning new stitches and starting to knit new projects. That is why today we are going to show you how to knit in star stitch.
It is an easy stitch just based on knitting and purling stitches.
And taking advantage of the cold season… What would a fringe in star stitch look like on the Centaurus Sweater ? It would make it stand out for sure!
The number of stitches has to be a multiple of 16 stitches + 1. The stitch is not reversible, but you can use it on either side depending on the look you want to achieve.
If you want to you can also just knit one star, then you would need 17 stitches.
Row 1(inside): knit one stitch, purl 15 stitches, knit one stitch.
Rows 2, 4 and 18 (outside): knit all stitches.
Rows 3 and 19: knit one stitch, *purl 7 stitches, knit one stitch*. Repeat from * to * two times.
Rows 5 and 17: knit one stitch, purl one stitch, knit one stitch, *purl 5 stitches, knit one stitch*. Repeat from * to * two times. Purl one stitch and knit the last stitch.
Rows 6 and 16: knit 3 stitches, purl one stitch, knit 9 stitches, purl one stitch, knit 3 stitches.
Rows 7 and 15: knit one stitch, purl 3 stitches, knit one stitch, *purl 3 stitches, knit one stitch*. Repeat from * to * two times, purl 3 stitches, knit one stitch.
Rows 8 and 14: *knit 5 stitches, purl one stitch*. Repeat from * to * two times, knit 5 stitches.
Rows 9 and 13: knit one stitch, purl 5 stitches, *knit one stitch, purl one stitch*. Repeat from * to * two times, knit one stitch, purl 5 stitches, knit one stitch.
Rows 10 and 12: knit 7 stitches, purl one stitch, knit one stitch, purl one stitch, knit 7 stitches.
Row 11: knit one stitch, purl one stitch, knit 5 stitches, purl one stitch, knit one stitch, purl one stitch, knit 5 stitches, Purl one stitch, knit one stitch.
Row 20: knit all stitches.
Repeat rows 1 to 20 until it your project has the desired length.
To knit in star stitch, we recommend you to use fine wool or cotton, that way the patterns will look a lot more clear and much more beautiful.
If you are motivated to try out this new stitch, don’t forget to show us your results on Instagram, using the hashtag #weareknitters.
We would love to see where you used it!

I apologize if I am in error but I believe there is a mistake in the instructions for this pattern in row 11. There should be a total of 17 stitches but the instructions have only 16. Could you clarify this for me please as I would love to make a blanket for my grandson full of stars!!!!! Thank you!!!!
Hi Deb,
Thanks for writing! You’re correct, there is an error. It should be this:
Row 11: knit 1, purl 1, knit 5, purl 1, knit 1, purl 1, knit 5, purl 1, knit 1.
