Sultan stitch is very similar to other crochet stitches we have seen, including shell stitch, but it’s a bit more complex and has more texture.
You can use it to make wool blankets or to make airy cotton garments.
To learn how to crochet Sultan stitch you only have to follow the instructions in our video, and also know how to crochet a chain and double crochet. Once you’ve done these things, you’re sure to get the hang of it very quickly.
Multiple of 4 + 2 stitches
Add 3 extra chains for the foundation chain.
Row 1: make one double crochet, chain 2 and one double crochet into the sixth chain from the crochet hook, *skip the next 3 stitches, make one double crochet, chain 2, and one double crochet into the next stitch*.
Repeat from * to * until there are 3 stitches remaining, skip the next 2 stitches, and make a double crochet into the last stitch. Turn your work.
Row 2: chain 3, skip the first 2 double crochets, *make 4 double crochets into the space formed by the 2 chains from the previous row, skip the next 2 double crochets*.
Repeat from * to * until the end of the row, skip the last double crochet and make a double crochet into the last chain in the row. Turn your work.
Row 3: chain 4, make a double crochet into the space formed by the two double crochets from the previous row, *skip the next 4 double crochets (they make up a group), make a double crochet, chain 2, and make a double crochet in the space left before the next group of double crochets*.
Repeat from * to * ending with a double crochet, one chain, and a double crochet in the space formed between the last double crochet from the previous row and the turning chain from the previous row.
Row 4: chain 3, skip the first double crochet, make 2 double crochets in the space formed by the turning chain from the previous row, *skip 2 double crochets, make 4 double crochets in the space formed by the 2 chains in the previous row*.
Repeat from * to *, ending with 3 double crochets in the last chain of the row. Turn your work.
Row 5: chain 3, skip the first 3 double crochets, *make one double crochet, chain 2, and one double crochet in the space left before the next group of double crochets. Skip 4 double crochets (they make up a group) *.
Repeat from * to * until the end, skip the last 2 double crochets and make a double crochet in the space of the chain from the previous row. Turn your work.
Repeat rows 2 to 5 until the desired length.
