In winter I go crazy trying out original knitting stitches, and I don’t think I’m the only one. In this post you will see how to knit the bobble stitch. It’s a fantasy stitch, but very subtle and easy to do. Besides, it ends up being very tight and it’s very cozy now that it’s a little bit cold outside. Shall we start?

It’s time to grab our size US 11 (8mm) knitting needles and one of our Petite Wool skeins. I’ve used a spotted beige color because it matches very well with anything.

The techniques you need to know in order to work this stitch pattern are:

If you still haven’t learnt how to count rows or you need a little reminder, you can check out our blog post “How to count rows in your project”.

I’ve started my swatch my knitting Stockinette Stitch to create and edge. Let’s begin with the Bobble stitch pattern:

You have to cast on a multiple of 4 + 1 stitches.

Row 1: knit all stitches.

Row 2: purl all stitches.

Row 3: knit all stitches.

Row 4: purl all stitches.

Row 5: *knit 3, insert the needle into the next stitch, but 4 rows below the one you’re currently working on. Drop the next stitch on the left-hand needle and unravel the stitches until you reach the one where you inserted the needle. Knit 1 trapping the 4 loose strands*. As it can be a little complicated, you can watch this video to see all the details:

Repeat from * to * until there is 1 stitch left and knit it.

Row 6: purl all stitches.

Row 7: knit all stitches.

Row 8: purl all stitches.

Row 9: knit all stitches.

Row 10: purl all stitches.

Row 11: knit 1. Knit 1 by inserting the needle into the 4th row below like we did on row 5 and continue knitting 3 stitches until the end of the row.

Row 12: purl all stitches.

At the end of the 12 rows you should have something that looks like this.

From now on, repeat rows 1 to 12 until you finish your project in bobble stitch, and share in your social media with the hashtag #WeAreKnitters.
